Benefits and risks of nursing bed rails

Potential benefits of bed railings include assisting in bed rotation and repositioning, providing handles for getting into or out of bed, providing comfort and safety, reducing the risk of patients falling out of bed during transportation, and easy access to bed controls and personal care products.

Potential risks of bed railings may include strangulation, suffocation, physical injury or death when a patient or part of his or her body is caught between the railings or between the bed railings and the mattress.

When patients climb over railings, falls can cause more serious injuries. Skin bruises, cuts and abrasions. Bed railings can cause agitation when used as restraints. Feeling isolated or unnecessarily limited. Prevent patients who are able to get out of bed from performing routine activities, such as going to the bathroom or retrieving items from a closet.

When using bed guardrail, continuously evaluate the patient’s physical and mental condition; Close monitoring of high-risk patients. Consider the following: Lower one or more parts of the bed rail, such as the foot rail. Use a properly sized mattress or one with raised foam edges to prevent the patient from getting trapped between the mattress and the guardrail and to reduce the gap between the mattress and the side rail.
